Instant Green Lawns.
Done Right from the Start.

Professional sod installation with proper grading and site preparation for commercial and residential properties across the Twin Cities metro.

Sod Installation That Lasts

Sod installation delivers an immediate result when a property needs an instant lawn. New construction sites, lawn replacements, and commercial properties that need to present well without waiting for seed to establish all benefit from professional sod installation. At Ristau Property Maintenance, we handle the entire process: site evaluation, grading, soil preparation, sod installation, and post-installation guidance.

The quality of a sod installation is determined almost entirely by what happens before the sod goes down. Proper grading, adequate soil preparation, and correct installation technique are what separate a lawn that roots cleanly and lasts from one that fails or develops problems within a season. We do not skip steps.

Lawn Grading

Grading is the most important step in any sod installation and the one most frequently shortcut by inexperienced contractors. We establish proper slope away from structures to prevent water intrusion, eliminate low spots that collect standing water, and create a smooth, firm surface that allows sod to make consistent soil contact. Poor grading is the root cause of most sod failures and drainage complaints.

Site Preparation

Before installation, we remove existing vegetation, debris, and rocks, till and amend the soil as needed, and ensure the surface is ready to receive sod. On new construction sites, we often work with compacted clay subsoil that needs significant amendment and ripping before it will support healthy turf. Proper site preparation is not optional if you want the sod to establish and stay healthy.

Sod Installation

We install sod in staggered rows with tight seams, rolling the sod after installation to eliminate air pockets and ensure consistent soil contact. Edges are cut cleanly along beds, walks, and drives for a finished appearance. We work efficiently on large commercial jobs and with the attention to detail that residential clients expect when their lawn is the project.

Lawn Replacement

When an existing lawn has failed beyond the point of recovery, full replacement is the most cost-effective path forward. We assess what caused the failure, address the underlying issue whether that is grubs, drainage, compaction, or disease, and install new sod on a properly prepared site. Replacing a failed lawn without identifying and fixing the cause is a waste of money.

Sod Installation Questions

Do you handle site grading before sod installation?

Yes. Proper grading is the foundation of a quality sod installation. We grade the site to establish correct slope for drainage, remove debris, and prepare a smooth, firm surface before any sod goes down. Skipping this step is the most common reason sod installations fail or develop drainage problems later.

What type of sod do you install?

We install sod varieties suited to Minnesota's climate and your site's specific conditions. The right variety depends on sun exposure, soil type, intended use, and traffic level. We source quality sod from regional suppliers and will recommend the appropriate variety for your project.

How long does sod take to root?

Under normal conditions, sod establishes root contact within 10 to 14 days and is typically ready for normal use within 3 to 4 weeks. Watering discipline in the first two weeks is critical. We provide post-installation care instructions with every job.

Can you replace a lawn that was damaged or failed?

Yes. Lawn replacement is one of the most common sod projects we handle. Whether the lawn failed due to grubs, drought, disease, construction damage, or neglect, we assess the cause, prepare the site correctly, and install new sod that establishes cleanly.

Do you install sod for commercial properties?

Yes. Commercial sod installation is a significant part of our work. New construction sites, HOA common areas, apartment complex grounds, and commercial property renovations all require professional installation at scale. We have the equipment and crew capacity for large commercial jobs.

What is the best time of year to install sod in Minnesota?

Spring and early fall are the optimal windows for sod installation in Minnesota. Cooler temperatures and reliable moisture reduce establishment stress. We can also install in summer with adequate irrigation, but the establishment window is narrower. We work with your schedule and advise on timing for your specific site.
